Aimed at first/second year courses in biochemistry particularly those with a chemical bias, this text is authoritative, comprehensive and reflects current research in biochemistry--especially the advances in molecular and protein structure. There is increased emphasis on Human Disease and more extensive use of molecular techniques. It includes extensive molecular biology material and presents biochemistry from a chemist s perspective. As with the previous edition an annual update Supplement will be published to accompany the text, keeping it as up-to-date as possible. A Solutions Manual is available to accompany this text. Contents: Introduction and Background: Life, Aqueous Solutions, Thermodynamic Principles: A Review, Biomolecules: Amino Acids, Techniques of Protein Purification, Covalent Structures of Proteins, Three-Dimensional Structures of Proteins, Protein Folding, Dynamics, and Structural Evolution, Haemoglobin: Protein Function in Microcosm, Sugars and Polysaccharides, Lipids and Membranes, Mechanisms of Enzyme Action: Introduction to Enzymes, Rates of Enzymatic Reactions, Enzymatic Catalysis, Metabolism: Introduction to Metabolism, Glycolysis, Glycogen Metabolism, Transport Through Membranes, Citric Acid Cycle, Electron Transport and Oxidative Phosphorylation, Other Pathways of Carbohydrate Metabolism, Photosynthesis, Lipid Metabolism, Amino Acid Metabolism, Energy Metabolism: Integration and Organ Specialisation, Nucleotide Metabolism, The Expression and Transmission of Genetic Information: DNA: the Vehicle of Inheritance, Nucleic Acid Structures and Manipulation, Transcription, Translation, DNA Replication, Repair and Recombination, Viruses: Paradigms for Cellular Functions, Eukaryotic Gene Expression, Molecular Physiology.

Alles in allem gewöhnungsbedürftig. Der Preis ist angemessen.

The Best yet - I find this biochemistry test so much better than the Stryer. The Stryer book keeps jumping, while the Voet ist very clear and keeps together topics that belong together. Also, all the explanations are really very good - things I didn t understand in the Stryer were perfectly clear to me after reading the chapter in the Voet about the same topic. The drawings are also much more understandable and learnable. The only thing I prefer in the Stryer is that the solutions are given in the back while with the Voet, you have to buy an extra book.

Pathetically inferior to Stryer - As a high school junior wishing to major in biochem, I read the vaunted Voet/Voet book and must say it is extremely disappointing. Although decent enough, Stryer s Biochem is much more comprehendable. And to that reader from Sweden, biochem is NOT supposed to be more about chem than about bio. Furthermore, it would be stupid and arrogant for a student simply to learn about the chemistry of molecular biology and not the relevance to biological systems...Styer does a better job of linking all those uncomprehendable chemistry stuff into real-world biological examples...

Best Book Biochem courses- even for Biologists! - 1.Clear. 2.Answers the questions any thinking reader might have. in italicised text. 3.Great for self learning 4.A worthy investment.

A book that takes biochemistry beyond the cartoon level. - I find this book the best of is kind. This is mainly due to the many details and very good reaction-chemistry. Competing books tend to reduce chemistry to the cartoon level. Biochemistry by Voet & Voet show the way by their detailed and precise, easy-to-follow reaction chemistry. This book, is the best choice for students that want to learn biochemistry, and not just passing exams.
